MENDOTA MAIN STREET PROGRAM

Mission Statement: To promote community involvement of the physical and cultural heritage within the historic business district of Mendota.

The Illinois Main Street Program is a preservation-based economic and community development program that follows the National Main Street Center’s Main Street approach. The approach emphasizes four critical areas of revitalization:

  • Organization helps everyone work towards the same goals and maximizes involvement of public and private leaders within the community.
  • Promotion brings people back downtown by helping to attract visitors, shoppers and investors.
  • Design enhances a district’s appearance and pedestrian amenities while preserving its historic features.
  • Economic Restructuring stimulates business development and helps strengthen the district’s economic base.

Join a committee: There are four committees; Organization, Promotion, Design, and Economic Restructuring. The committees are diverse and we have many different opportunities for people to get involved. Contact the Mendota Main Street office at 815-538-5043, or mainstreetmendota@yahoo.com

Why is downtown important? Even if you don’t work, shop or live near the downtown, the condition and success of the downtown business district affects the entire community. Long-term revitalization establishes stability in businesses that generate tax dollars which in turn support our city, county and school district. A vital downtown is essential to recruiting new families, businesses, visitors, and is a reflection of the overall health of the community.

Contribute Financially: Programs are funded through contributions from individuals, families, businesses, downtown property owners and local government. By contributing financially you are investing in Mendota’s future.

Facade Grant Program: The City of Mendota provides grants to commercial building owners and business owners in the Historic Preservation District located in downtown Mendota. The purpose of the program is to provide a financial incentive to property owners and business owners to improve the visible exteriors (facades) of their buildings.
